After reading all the themed books about reptiles this month, the mini-monsters would really like to see them in real life. Although there are also reptiles in Blijdorp, today we are going to Reptile House De Aarde in Breda. We have been there before and we really liked it! Although the space is not large, there are many very special animals to view up close.

Right away it's fun outside, there are various dinosaurs! At the entrancewe alredy see Spurred Tortoises, from the Sahara desert in Africa. But we first have to go past the entrance of course and then we are inside! So funny, the African Spurred Tortoises are walking inside with us! They can choose from the outside whether they want to go in or rather stay outside.

See? There are the African Spurred Tortoises again! Next to the Track Turtles lives the Asian Water Monitor. On the other side a large pool has been made, for the Yellow-eared Sliders. You can buy food here and feed the turtles yourself.

The caretakers will show you various animals outside their pen. You may pet them or hold them yourself, even the Python! Then we go upstairs, to see a beautiful Plumed Basilisk (female).

The male has a crown on its head and a crest on its back.

This is the Mertens' Water Monitor from Australia.

This is the Blue Tree Monitor from Batanta, Indonesia.

This is the African Savannah Monitor, Puk likes itvery much!

The Plumed Basilisk comes from Central Amerika, spacifically from South Mexico and Northern Colombia. A fun fact: these Plumed Basilisk Lizards can run on water when threatened, which is why they are nicknamed "Jesus Christ Lizard".

The Mertens Water monitor is a hunter that searches for food on the riverbank, for example crabs and frogs. Very special: he also hunts in the water, for fish.

Another awesome animal that the caretaker shows us up close is the Giant Prickly Stick Insect, a stick insect from Australia. We are surprised when the caretaker tells us that this animal is a stick insect. He doesn't look like the stick insects we know. But it is a beautiful and smart animal that the caretaker can tell you a whole lot about.

We can't even show you all the animals of Reptile House De Aarde (The Earth) here, because we also saw a toad; caiman; chameleon; more lizards and monitor lizards and also various snakes. We might even forget someone to mention now! So go and see for yourself during the holiday, it's very interesting here an super fun!

What is also super fun and very special: the small souvenir shop! There are the cutest reptile items for sale, from very cheap to more expensive. Sweet baby dinosaur cuddly toys, but also soft snakes and monitor lizards. You get something very special from the balls in the machine, a piece of real shed snakeskin.

You can celebrate your birthday here and/or help a caretaker feeding. We walk along the Carpet Python, a strangler from Australia. The Panther Chameleon is another exeptional beautiful animal.

It comes from parts of East and North Madagascar, from the Rainforest. His beautiful colours radiate from his body, you can see that very well in the photo! It is a misconception that every chameleon can change it's colour. The Panther Chameleon for instance can not. But ... it's tongue can sometimes grow longer than himself and that is really true!.

Our pet monitor wants to say goodbye to the Savannah Monitor before we go and we take a blue tree monitor (soft toy) home. Outside Puk likes the Stegosaurs very much, but then we really go home. What a fun day it was and what a lot we have learned today!

A little message from our heart: The animal enclosures are very beautiful, spacious, clean and with lots of greenery and branches, in which animals can hide or climb. The animals are very well taken care of, they are very lively, even the cold-blooded ones :)) The employees receive our heartfelt compliments, the attention to the children couldn't be better! They know so much about the animals and all our questions were patiently answered. They are all very friendly and helpful, the coffee was delicious and they made it such a fun day for us!

Three+ bright shining snazzie stars for Reptile House De Aarde, really well deserved!
