The first of our Japanese books of the month of May is a beautiful young adult comic book: The Yellow Jar, from the Songs of our Ancestors series. The book is created by American artist, cartoonist and author Patrick Atangan and it is part 1 of 3 parts so far. This series of books is very special because they are all folktales in the Asian Tradition. Two more volumes were published, The Silk Tapestry, with three traditional stories from China and Tree of Love, a romantic story in tradition of India (not translated into Dutch).
The artwork of Patrick Atangan is brilliant, indistinguishable from a Japanese artist. From the graphic patterns on the kimonos to the traditional hairstyles and typical white faces, very beautiful! The traditional style and the subtle colours he uses make his work look old and at the same time very modern.
But after publishing 5 books Patrick Atangan unfortunately stopped with it, he could not earn a living with it. We also think it's a shame because his books make us very happy!
