During Snazzie's History Month, we're looking for a history book at the library, for our little monsters to read by themselves or to us. Achter de jagers aan (Chasing the Hunters) by Dutch author Elisa van Spronsen is such a book; it's included in the Dutch history canon. It is not only a beautiful and adventerous story but it is also an informative and educational book.
This book is rated AVI M5, so it's for ages 8-9 years and up, but we let our 10-year-old read it, because it is quite a challenge. But it is going fine and he likes the story very much. It is exciting but fortunately it ends well.
The accompanying drawings were created by Dutch illustrator Hélenè Jorna and we think they are beautiful. The coulors, the style of the drawings, and the atmosphere—it's all there. Together, these ladies have created a truly beautiful book, and we thoroughly enjoyed reading it! (Sadly this book is not translated into the English language).
3 centuries-old stars for Achter de jagers aan (In persuit of the Hunters), from our young readers and their (older) listeners!
